VICTORIA - Affordable universities and colleges must be a top priority. That is the message students, instructors, and community members had for premier Christy Clark.
"Relief from record-high student debt should be central to a families agenda," said Nimmi Takkar, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-BC. "Students are eager to hear Premier Clark's plan to reduce student debt."
Families in British Columbia are faced with the highest student debt west of the Maritimes, but the lowest provincial spending on non-repayable student assistance.
The ongoing Education Shouldn't be a Debt Sentence campaign calls on the government to increase core funding, to reduce tuition fees, to establish a needs-based grants program, and to eliminate interest rates on student loans.
"Faculty members are all too familiar with the impact of chronic government underfunding," said Cindy Oliver, President of the Federation of Post-secondary Educators. "The Clark government needs to meet the funding needs of BC's colleges and universities."
