Canadians are hoping to unwrap technology this holiday season: top desired gifts - tablets and laptops

TORONTO - Looking to give that perfect holiday gift? A new nationwide study has found that 60% of Canadians say they would like to receive a technology gift this season, with tablets topping their list as the most wanted present (16%) followed by laptops (10%). Other tech gifts desired include digital cameras (6%) and e-Readers (5%).

The study also highlighted that at this point, more people are hoping to receive tech gifts than are planning to give them. Given challenging economic times, it's not surprising: shoppers will be looking for value like never before.

Among the holiday survey's other key findings:

  • 68% of Canadian consumers purchased at least one electronic device in the past year;
  • 23% bought laptops, compared with only 13% who chose desktop computers and 6% who picked up tablets;
  • 52% of Canadian consumers have not upgraded their computers within the last three years, meaning that the majority have not yet taken full advantage of the newest technology;

Canadians are not currently using technology to its full capacity:

  • While 77% use computers for email, only 53% say they pay bills online
  • 33% manage photos and multimedia
  • 29% shop on the Internet
  • Even fewer watch online movies (18%) and TV (13%)
