The founders of Pulse Networks want to tag the world. Brett Bergmann, Benjamin Roberts, Brian Mosoff and Kamal Mansouri are building a location-based app called Pulse the World that allows people to tag and learn about everything that's happening around them in real-time.
Three of the founders of Pulse Networks met in the basement of their high school during an A/V club meeting. Now they have a view of the city at the top floor offices of Orbixa Management Services, where they are figuring out how to change the world. The group has just received a second round of funding from the Toronto-based venture capital firm.
"This is not just another iPhone app", says Kamal Mansouri, Chief Technology Officer. By the age of 23, Kamal had already been employed by both Google and Microsoft. Now at 26, he is applying his cloud computing expertise to Pulse the World. "We are able to deal with a type of information which so far eludes both Google and Twitter. I'm excited to be building a system with such infinite potential."
While hard at work building the software, Pulse Networks is teaming up with major festivals and event centres who will use the platform to provide real-time event data to their participants. Harbourfront Centre and the Toronto Pride Week are the latest additions to the growing list of Pulse partners.
"Pulse The World is a fantastic new app for Toronto residents and visitors alike," said Bruce Hutchinson, Director of Marketing and Media Relations at Harbourfront Centre. "We are planning over three thousand events this summer, and our visitors will be able to use the Pulse the World mobile app to keep in touch with all that's happening across our 10-acre site."
"Pulse the World will be a great new tool for people attending Toronto's Pride Festival to learn about and take part in our many events and performances as they explore the city," said Francisco Alvarez, cochair of Pride. "We're really pleased to introduce this colourful free app to our hundreds of thousands of participants this June."
The excitement at the Pulse Networks office is unmistakable. "This is the app that is going to be running all the time on your phone," said Pulse Networks co-founder Benjamin Roberts. "It is going to help you find and do better things, whether in your own back yard or another city altogether. We've had beta testers tagging everything - traffic jams, free samples, even the current co-ordinates of celebrities. I don't think celebrities are going to like us very much."
Pulse the World is an application that allows people to tag the world around them and accounts for the location and time relevance of user-generated content. It will be available in May for the iPhone, and available for Android and Blackberry before the end of summer.
